www.ncpad.org Fiber is a really important part of our diet. Fiber is very important because it helps keep you full longer and it also helps with blood sugar control. One of the best sources of fiber is fruits and vegetables. Things like apples, when you eat the skin is a very very good source of fiber. Citrus fruits are real good as well. When you cut open a citrus fruit you cut you kind of almost see that fibery substance in there as well so the difference would be having an orange instead of orange juice. Also, green leafy vegetables, berries are also very good sources of fiber. In addition to produce, whole grain breads and cereals, brown rice are also very good sources of fiber. Breads can be a great source of fiber. However, its very very important to read the label on breads to know what you are really getting. For example, this white bread here, when you look at the label, it contains zero grams of fiber per slice. So this would not be a very healthy choice. You want to look at the amount of fiber, like here it says zero grams. You also want to look at the ingredient list. For example, if you see enriched flower as the first ingredient its probably going to be a little lower in fiber. You want to look for thinks like whole wheat flower, oat flower, things like that as the first ingredient. Those are going to be generally higher in the fiber.
